In 1870, when white men and Indians are fighting bitterly, Tom Jeffords (Stewart) strongly believes the Apaches are treated unfairly. After befriending their leader Cochise (Jeff Chandler) and arranging a truce, he is called upon by a U.S. Army general to negotiate a government peace treaty. Though he fulfills his mission, Jeffords soon experiences great tragedy when he, his Indian wife (Debra Paget) and good friend Cochise become targets of a renegade ambush.

Two of the cast members from the 1950 western Broken Arrow, Jeff 
Chandler and Jay Silverheels, recreate their earlier roles in 1952's Battle 
at Apache Pass. Chandler plays temperate Indian leader Cochise, while 
Silverheels is the more explosive Geronimo. The film takes place several 
years before the events depicted in Broken Arrow, a time in which 
Cochise attempts to prevent war between his people and the white 
settlers. Though Cochise's wife dies at the hands of a bigoted cavalry 
officer and a crooked Indian agent, the stoic Native American continues 
to believe that a lasting peace is possible. Two years after Battle at 
Apache Pass, Jeff Chandler would again reprise the role of Cochise (this 
time as a dying old man) in Taza, Son of Cochise (1954).

The two sons of Apache leader Cochise (Jeff Chandler) have conflicting views of the white men who trepass on their land; Taza (Rock Hudson) argues for peaceful co-existence but his younger brother Naiche (Bart Roberts) joins Geronimo on the warpath. One of the few Westerns made in the 1950s that attempted to present a positive view of Native Americans, Taza, Son of Cochise was the second of eight movies that Rock Hudson made with director Douglas Sirk. Filmed on location in Utah, the natural setting of the desert is one of the movie's many assets which is vividly captured by the glorious Technicolor cinematography.
