DESCRIPTION:

Jamaica Inn: Based on the novel by Daphne Du Maurier, a young woman discovers her uncle heads a gang of ship-wreckers and murderers under the secret patronage of the local squire. Her efforts to stop their wicked ways leads her down a path filled with murder and betrayal. JAMAICA INN was the first of Hitchcock's adaptations of Daphne Du Maurier's novels including REBECCA and THE BIRDS. It was also Hitchcock's last film made in the UK before coming to America. / The Skin: Based on the memoirs of author Curzio Malaparte, diplomatic liaison between the Allied and Italian forces after the defeat of the Nazi's in Italy, director Cavani's (The Night Porter) film is an unflinching look the collapse of Italian society under the US occupation and the desperate measures required for survival. An unforgettable and controversial film. / Tristana: Deneuve plays Tristana, a virginal young girl who goes to live with her guardian who eventually breaks through his facade of respectability and seduces her. She repays him a hundred-fold, preying on his jealousy and taunting him with perverse whimsies. / Farewell, My Queen: Farewell, My Queen marks the return of acclaimed director Benoît Jacquot (A Single Girl,Seventh Heaven, Sade, Deep in the Woods) and brilliantly captures the passions, debauchery, occasional glimpses of nobility and ultimately the chaos that engulfed the court of Marie Antoinette in the final days before the full-scale outbreak of the Revolution. Based on the best-selling novel by Chantal Thomas, the film stars Léa Seydoux as one of Marie's ladies-in-waiting, seemingly innocent but quietly working her way into her mistress's special favors, until history tosses her fate onto a decidedly different path. With the action moving effortlessly from the gilded drawing rooms of the nobles to the back quarters of those who serve them, this is a period film at once accurate and sumptuous in its visual details and modern in its emotions. Diane Kruger gives her best performance to date as the ill-fated Queen and Virginie Ledoyen is the Queen's special friend Gabrielle de Polignac.
