DESCRIPTION:
The Electra myth and the classic play by Laszlo Gyurko are wildly re-imagined in this film adaptation. Electra (Mari Törocsik) awaits the arrival of her brother and the body of those who killed King Agamemnon. When her brother returns, he has killed another instead. Electra vows revenge, killing her brother only to see him resurrected again. This resurrection sparks a revolutionary air.
Director Miklos Jancso (THE RED AND THE WHITE, THE ROUND UP) has taken great liberties in this lively adaptation. Not only has he changed the ending dramatically, but he has also turned the play into what some have termed a political musical. The director's use of long takes and fluid camera movement was highly influential on fellow countryman Bela Tarr (WERCKMEISTER HARMONIES) and is most evident here as this film of great scope and bold choreography is captured in only 12 shots.
