When Mary Peppertree (Durbin), a White House telephone operator, breaks her engagement to marry an attorney (Jeffrey Lynn) for the Justice Department, it causes a stir and encourages two new admirers, David (Taylor) and Tom (O'Brien), to pursue her. Mary's romantic entanglements soon become the talk of the White House and even the President of the United States and four Supreme Court justices try to play Cupid for her.
