The first of the series of starring westerns Don Barry made at Republic, following his lead
role as "Red Ryder" in "The Adventures of Red Ryder" serial for Republic, and it was only in
his 2nd starring film that Republic changed his billing name to Don "Red" Barry in order to
take advantage of the association with the serial that was still playing around the country.
Prior to the release of the 2nd film, any cast that shows the name of Don "Red" Barry in the
cast is historicaly incorrect, as that billing name did not exist in the 1930's. His first starring
effort finds him as government agent Tim Brandon (Don Barry as Donald Barry) being sent
to Silver City to investigate a series of holdups between the final relay station and Silver City.
He assumes the identity of "The Tolusa Kid", a bandit that was recently killed. Frank Ewing
(LeRoy Mason), the manager of the stagecoach line, is secretly behind the robbery gang and
Sam Kennelly (Jack Ingram), the relay station agent, is his chief henchman. There is never
any discovery of the stages nor the passengers, and the gang lays the blame for the siege
on the Tolusa Kid. Ewing cautions his gang to pursue the Kid but not to capture him as they
would then have nobody to blame. Linda Morley (Lona Andre), Ewing's niece, is unaware of
her uncle's activities but when Tim learns of an impending stage robbery, he convinces her
he is a government agent and persuades her to warn the Sheriff (Tom London.)
