DESCRIPTION:
- Director Jean-Luc Godard begins to truly delve into the intellectual ramifications of film language on world culture with ICI ET AILLEURS (Here and Elsewhere). Along with fellow directors Anne-Marie Miéville and Jean-Pierre Gorin, Godard names his groundbreaking threesome the Dziga Vertov Group, in a tribute to the famed Russian filmmaker whose contributions changed cinema art forever. In this 55-minute experiment, here is France and elsewhere is Palestine...and the group uses a barrage of innovative film and video techniques to contrast families from both places. But Godard, Miéville, and Gorin not only want to capture the differences between the two cultures, they want to capture the different ways the media portrays them. So they superimpose and juxtapose fragments from television, literature, and photographs, always considering how the production of images influences how the world is seen. Both film and video are combined, as well as projected footage and slides, in order to superimpose more than two images simultaneously, adding literal layers to the film's multilayered ideologies. Deeply challenging in a way that defines the greatest of artistic achievements, ICI ET AILLEURS is a provocative, stirring indictment of visual art's ability to change the world.
