On his way to assume command of the Jurak garrison in the 17th century, Polish Col. Jan Ketusky spends the night at Rosloghi castle. There he falls in love with Elena, the ward of Princess Kinzevich, who, in return for protection, has promised Elena's hand in marriage to Bohun, the commander of the garrison at Lubin and a powerful Ukrainian ally of the Poles. Despite the engagement, Ketusky wins Elena's love and persuades the princess to agree to their marriage. Discovering her infidelity, the enraged Bohun burns the palace, kills its inhabitants, abducts Elena, and joins forces with Tartars and Ukrainians to attack the garrison commanded by Ketusky. The Polish forces, however, are victorious, and Bohun is slain.
