Chad Everett and James Daly, as Chief of Surgery Joe Gannon and Chief of Staff Paul Lochner, return for another season of their groundbreaking medical drama. While the country around it seethed through a time of astonishing societal changes, Medical Center remained at the vanguard of science and drama. Among the season’s standouts is the Shirley Knight-starring episode, “The Tainted Lady,” which received a citation from the American Cancer Society for its treatment of the stigma then surrounding breast cancer and radical mastectomies. Other issues confronted include nymphomania, the intersection of faith and medicine, treatment of undocumented workers, resurgent white supremacy, the integration of the mentally challenged into society and the chemical castration of convicted sex offenders.
