The Miracle Of Morgan's Creek (1944)
Starring Eddie Bracken, Betty Hutton, Diana Lynn, William Demarest, Porter Hall, Emory Parnell
Directed by Preston Sturges
Print: Black/white
Runtime: N/A min.
Genre: Comedy
One of Paramount's funniest films of the forties is this Preston Sturges screwball classic staring Betty Hutton (The Greatest Show on Earth) and Eddie Bracken (Hail the Conquering Hero.) Hutton is Trudy Kockenlocker, a small-town gal who feels it is her patriotic duty to dance the night away with soldiers who are headed oversees. But after too many glasses of "victory lemonade," Trudy jitterbugs right into a chandelier - and awakens the next morning to find a mysterious wedding ring on her finger, and no recollection of her new "husband"! That's when she decides to find a quick, surrogate spouse and sets her sights on her lovelorn, childhood friend, Norval Jones (Bracken). This frantic, audacious comedy hit landed Sturges a 1944 Academy Awardr nomination for Best Original Screenplay.
Rock-A-Bye Baby (1958)
Starring Jerry Lewis, Marilyn Maxwell, Salvatore Baccaloni, Connie Stevens, Hope Emerson.
Directed by Frank Tashlin
Print: Black/white
Runtime: 103 min.
Genre: Drama
In a loose remake of Preston Sturges' classic The Miracle of Morgan Creek, Goofy TV Repairman, Clayton Poole (Jerry Lewis) becomes an unexpected father of three infant girls. The girls are the children of his childhood sweetheart, now a famous actress, Carla Naples (Marilyn Maxwell). She must temporarily give up the children to protect her career and star in a major Hollywood production. It's triple the hijinks, triple the fun and triple the laughs! Whether it's changing the diapers, warming the bottles or singing off-key lullabies, this in-over-his-head nanny will have you laughing 'til it hurts. The song "Dormi-Dormi-Dormi" performed by Jerry and Salvatore Baccalone, as a duet is one of the most beautiful and touching pieces of music any film has ever produced. Both Connie Stevens and Jerry's son Gary (of Gary Lewis and the Playboys fame) made their feature film debuts. This was the third (of eight) collaboration between Jerry and director Frank Tashlin (The Geisha Boy).
